In these pages, the MEMORABILIA staff
have endeavored to record both in pictures
and in prose some of the many every-day
scenes and extra-curricular programs which
have become so much a part of college ac-
tivity to the class of 1954.

Newark State's philosophy of teaching has
helped to shape the teacher personalities of
this class. Many learning experiences shared
here have become vital and livable as they
have become the professional equipment of
these seniors.

College, however, has meant much more
than the preparation for a professional life.
Four years have now become a shadow of
classes, dances, field trips, NJEA conven-
tions, lab antics, Student Org and the #13
bus.

The MEMORABILIA staff in this annual
have tried to record faithfully Newark State
in pictures as a type of memory gauge. May
this book represent to each senior a com-
posite reminder of his college days at Newark
State.

We, as the ninety-ninth
graduating class from New
Jersey State Teachers' Col-
lege at Newark, dedicate
the 1954 MEMORABILIA to
our good friend and able
faculty member, Dr. David
S. Scanlon. Though he has
only been with us for three
years, his genuine warmth
and sincerity have truly
made him outstanding. We
will long hold his example of
fine teaching as our ultimate
goal.

We, as the class of '54, entered Newark
State in September of 1950 as the typical
shaking freshmen. Having found our way to
the third floor and the gym, we tried to hide
in the crowds and behind our flutophones;
but this was not to be our fate; the sopho-
mores had other ideas. We donned our
placards, frosh hats (with brims down) and
our shopping bags and proceeded to be ac-
cepted as part of the college. This was the
year for bio field trips, "Gaie Paree", get-
ting acquainted and art in the auditorium.
Our semi-formal dance began our careers
as social reformers.

u

L

Once again we returned, but now we were
sophomores. We really had something to
work for this year — the Bond Issue. How
could we forget the posters, the speeches,
and Dr. Wilkins on TV; but, best of all, that
it went through. Of course, just to keep
changing things, we had a musical comedy in-
stead of the usual variety show. This was
the year of Moby Dick, the Grey Ladies,
Dr. Gens, concerts, field trips, INTRODUC-
TION TO AMERICAN EDUCATION and
last but not least our picnic.

Now we were juniors at last; the end was
in sight. This was the year of practicum,
"The Circus", boat ride around the harbor,
prom at the Winfield Scott, engagement
rings, another picnic and the April Fool RE-
FLECTOR.

We returned in September as seniors,
looking forward to graduation and teaching.
We had a year of practice teaching,
"Seniorama", wedding rings, contracts, Senior
dance, senior court, and/or
